Memorial Day is a federal holiday celebrated each year on the last Monday in May to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.  It originated as Decoration Day after the Civil War as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers and American flags.  It became the federal holiday Memorial Day in 1971 and is a time for remembrance and to honor those who gave their lives in preservation of our freedom.
