Tips & Tricks for Painting Beadboard

August 27th, 2014

Do you have a craft or DIY project that will include beadboard? Not sure of the best technique for painting beadboard? Check out the tips and tricks below to help you achieve the painted finish you desire.

  1. Use a large dry paintbrush to dust all the grooves so you have a clean and dust free surface to paint. There is nothing more disappointing than finishing a paint job and seeing little dust particles stuck all in your finished surface.
  2. Choose a roller nap length and roller size. A ¼” nap generally leads to a smooth finished surface with little stipple or texturing. Choose a roller size that best suits the size of your project.
  3. Prep your roller by taking painters tape (or any tape) and wrap it around your roller. Remove the tape and repeat a couple of times in order to remove all the loose lint from the roller. As with the step one above, you don’t want loose lint particles stuck in your finished surface.
  4. You can either lay the beadboard panel on a flat surface to paint or paint post installation. This all depends on your preference and the project. Sometimes it’s easier to paint beadboard while it’s lying flat so that you can get paint in all the grooves or beads. If you are painting pre installation, allow adequate drying time and be prepared to do some touch up painting post installation.
  5. Use an angled sponge or paint brush to ensure that you get paint in the grooves (beads). If you keep enough paint on your roller you may be able to do this with the roller. It all depends on your painting “style”.
  6. Paint in sections keeping a wet edge, just as you would a wall.
  7. Once completely painted, allow dry time, touch up any areas that may need it, then fill, sand and paint any nail holes.
