The Negatives of Using Meranti and Lauan Plywood

Meranti plywood (Lauan) is a generic term for imported tropical hardwood plywood.  There are many serious disadvantages to using Meranti plywood.  The raw material for Meranti plywood originates from poorly managed non-sustainable sources.  The over-harvesting of Meranti has led to the destruction of the tropical rain forests.  Meranti plywood is badly packaged which often leads to product damage during shipment.  Meranti plywood is inconsistent in appearance and density.  The panels may contain natural resins that can make glue bonding and finishing difficult.

Meranti plywood/Lauan plywood originates from tropical hardwood forests along the Equator that have not been managed for long-term sustainability.

The appearance of Meranti plywood/Lauan plywood varies significantly from shipment to shipment depending on the source.

Meranti plywood/Lauan plywood is sold as utility or overlay and better grade which allows for the presence of knots, patches, and discoloration.

Meranti plywood/Lauan plywood has been packaged the same for the past 30 years. The crates have weak plywood covers with no corner protection, and an inner liner of thin clear plastic which can lead to end and edge damage and the potential for the growth of mold inside the crates.
